Manuel Mendes, 97, died peacefully at home on November 13, 2019, surrounded by loving family. Born in Varzea de Abrunhais, Portugal to José and Assunção (de Almeida) Mendes. He worked as an accountant for the first forty-five years of his life in Portugal before emigrating to the United States in 1967 with his wife, the late Odete (Goncalves) Mendes, to whom he was married for an incredible 75 years, and their family. Mr. Mendes resided in Pawtucket for the past 50 years. Manuel was the father of Maria Lafferty, Maria Lavault, Linda Bowen, Antonio Goncalves Mendes, Tony, Manuel J, Fred, Paul, Peter and John Mendes, 24 grand, 11 great and a great great-grandchild. He worked as an electrical engineer for Texas Instruments from 1968 until his retirement in 1987 Mr. Mendes will be remembered for his tenacity in the face of adversity and his fierce dedication to his children’s success. Visitation will take place Friday, November 15 from 4-7pm at Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Avenue, Lincoln, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 16 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland, RI. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the RI Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
